1857-1934. English composer. His Enigma
Variations appeared 1899, and although his
celebrated choral work, the oratorio setting
of Newman's The Dream of Gerontius, was
initially a failure, it was well received at
Dusseldorf in 1902. Many of his earlier works
were then performed, including the Pomp and
Circumstance marches. Among his later works
are oratorios, two symphonies, a violin
concerto, a cello concerto, chamber music,
songs, and the tone-poem Falstaff 1913.
